Mark Zuckerberg's Meta Is Putting Its In-House Iris AI Chip Into Production in September as Part of a Plan to Double Its Computing Capacity to 14 Gigawatts
Yahoo Finance ·
CEO Mark Zuckerberg is focused on turning Meta Platforms ( META 2.79% ) into a leader in artificial intelligence (AI). An internal memo revealed plans to move Iris, its custom data center AI chip, into production in September, and to double the company's data center capacity to 14 gigawatts in 2027. This is significant for investors because Meta's stock is not currently valued like an AI leader. It trades at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 21, a discount compared with most of the other "Magnificent Seven" stocks, which largely trade at multiples of around 25 or higher. If Meta succeeds at turning its heavy capital spending into more profitable growth, the market could re-rate the stock to a level more in line with its peers. Earlier this year, Meta CFO Susan Li acknowledged that data center capacity planned 12 to 36 months ago is no longer sufficient. New data center construction requires a multiyear lead time, even as the demand for AI processing power continues to grow. This is creating a bottleneck in the technology's growth.
AI 시장 분석
Meta has confirmed the production of its proprietary AI chip, Iris, for September and announced plans to double its data center capacity to 14GW by 2027. Meta is currently trading at a forward P/E of 21x, which is undervalued compared to other big tech firms. If this infrastructure investment leads to improved profitability, a market re-rating is expected, and the aggressive move to secure AI dominance is drawing investor attention.
상승 영향
- AI — Production of the Iris chip and expanded data center capacity strengthen AI infrastructure competitiveness. This will enhance Meta's AI services and operational efficiency, driving long-term earnings growth.
- Semiconductors — Meta's in-house chip production continuously stimulates demand for computational units in data centers. This boosts the overall AI semiconductor ecosystem and positively impacts related supply chain companies.
DYAX 전담 분석
Meta's strategy focuses on vertical integration to reduce dependence on third-party hardware and optimize AI performance. By scaling data center capacity, the company aims to support the next generation of generative AI models. The current valuation gap presents an entry opportunity if execution remains consistent with long-term goals.
